Prayer Board

Inspired by the movie the War Room which is a call to serious prayer and shows how having a special quiet place and a Prayer Board aids us in our conversation with and requests to God.
A member of my family mentioned that she would like to have a special “Prayer Board” with Scriptures and all the necessary tools to record her prayers. I was inspired by this idea and took a (too lengthy) tour of Pinterest to find ideas for making it special.

My fingers always itch to try something new and I just couldn’t let this go, so decided to make a Prayer Board as a gift for her.
I searched through the mountains of “should be chucked out” stuff I keep in my studio and there it was! The perfect frame…an old canvas stretcher frame that is somewhat worse for the wear but still structurally sound. Fabulous! A bit of a clean up and a coat of grey paint and I had the frame. I also found a discarded piece of hardboard lying around to attach to the frame as a backing. Yes if you haven’t figured it out yet….I am something of a hoarder of things. But only things that could be turned into pretty things! ( She says!)

Just a note, I decided not to attach the back board to the frame until I had finished all the little bits and pieces. So from the start, I was working on the hardboard, the frame set aside for the meantime. Since the frame was divided into 4 quarters, I traced the 4 “blocks” onto the backing board so that everything would be balanced and equal once the frame was attached.

Now to decide, what would a Prayer Board have on it? Obviously one needs to be able to peg one’s written prayers to it. Normal run of the mill wooden washing pegs are the perfect answer. I decided to decoupage pretty tissue paper on to the pegs. Next, I had a little Scripture card given us by our church sometime ago that has the perfect Scripture and all prettily done. I Scanned and glued it on to the board.

One section of the board now completed, I moved on to the next. This would be a section where one could pin a different Scripture each week. I typed up a heading “Verse of the week” in a font that grabbed me, printed it out and glued onto one of the quarters of the board. I spent a fair amount of time typing up a selection of favourite Scriptures in large and attractive fonts then wondered how I would display them on my Prayer board. A bulldog clip would be ideal but I wasn’t sure how to attach the clip to the board. While playing around, I discovered that a drawing pin would pierce through the hardboard! I also found that the head of the pin would prevent it from going right through and I had merely to insert it through the very convenient little hole at the top of the bulldog clip! 

I didn’t like the plain white of the paper and at the last minute I decoupaged some pretty silver-ish tissue paper to that section, just to add a bit of oomph

To personalise the Prayer Board, I decided to have a Family prayer section. I created a collage on PowerPoint of photos of the family and decoupaged that on to one of the quarters. I then simply glued 5 pegs above that (It is a family of five). Nearly done! Three quarters completed!

The last section was for the “tools” required for an effective Prayer Board. I found small wooden paper holders at the stationers and bought two of those. Painted a white base coat and then decoupaged some pretty tissue paper over them. I painted little wooden hearts black and glued them on. It seemed a bit bare and I thought about the Scripture I had found, asking for blessings upon the house. That would be perfect since we always want our household blessed and protected. So this would serve as a Daily prayer displayed on the Prayer Board. I typed it up nicely, printed and glued to the board.Simple and easy!

Now all four sections were complete and I was really rather pleased with myself! Next I laid the frame  face down on the floor, placed the board face down on top of that, being careful to ensure the edges were properly lined up and stapled the board onto the frame with a heavy duty stapler. Voila! Finished!

Hubby very kindly attached screws and wire to the back for hanging purposes and it’s ready to go!

I encourage you to try this out! It is a really easy and straightforward project to undertake and the results are quite satisfying! I pray the recipients will be blessed by this Prayer Board going forward.
