The Capulana is the traditional Mozambican fabric worn as sarongs by the locals. I am always fascinated by the striking colours and designs and felt a strong urge to play around and see if I could produce paintings that work on top of these bold colours. I am inspired by the Mozambican womens’ beauty and hard working nature and these paintings came about through that inspiration. I found that the fabric holds acrylic paint beautifully and loved the process of placing the figure strategically within the design of the fabric. I hope that these works serve as a tribute to these women and their capulanas.
